Assignment Description

Objective:

Using your rigid object (positive), make a one or two part mould (negative).

After you have the mould >> Optional: Use a material of your choice (candy, chocolate, sugarĀ (Links to an external site.), rice, pulp, resin etc.) and cast two replicas of your original rigid object.

Assignment Prompts:

  1. What features are you able to capture using your moulding material (such as silicone)?

  2. What does the duplication through casting do to the original object in your case? What is the relation between multiplicity and having a single of something -- preservation vs. special object?

  3. What is an alternative technique you could use to produce the same object -- why would you prefer one over the other?

  4. Find at least one traditional moldmaker from your local region, and reflect on their process.

  5. How are the materials and techniques you used linked to other historical mouldingĀ (Links to an external site.) / [castingĀ (Links to an external site.)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casting#:~:text=7 Further reading-,History,on statue and relic castings.) methods?

Motivation

My initial idea is to use Lego pieces to mould and cast then with different materials

Process

I decided to 3d print my initial models so I first prepare the 3d model file. The 3d models were originally found online then I made some change to it in Rhino. I gathered several pieces of lego and a leave just incase one doesn't work out.

After the file is prepared I went to the 3D lab and printed it out.
