Make one object using basket weaving techniques.

Rainbow Catcher

Motivation: The idea of this work came into my mind when I was soaking the in-progress basket in water trying to soften the reed again. When taking out the basket from water, the way water leaked out through those holes on its bottom really drew my attention, I found it so beautiful and that also reminded me of an old Chinese saying: "竹篮打水一场空", which basically means "Draw water with a sieve - All in vain." So a basket is not something you can use to get water :)

But I also notice that light is something that can go inside of the basket through holes and there is no way you can block them out. I was wondering what if I draw water with a sieve in the sun. Will that still be all in vain? Noooo, you may catch a rainbow.

So I made this basket into a sculpture-like art piece that conveys the idea - thinking of a basket as a rainbow catcher.

Creating Process:

  1. Preparation - soak some flat reed in water

Were you able to create any motif on the basket? - No...

  3. Finished Basket
